Description

Lepanthes barbelifera

Name: Lepanthes barbelifera

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from Greek word elements and refers to the scaly or finely textured appearance of these miniature orchids. The specific epithet barbelifera means “bearing little beards” and refers to the fine hair- or beard-like structures of the flower.

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend shade to bright, diffused light, high humidity, and continuous gentle air movement. Moderate conditions of approximately 13–24°C during the day and 9–17°C at night are favorable. The fine roots should remain evenly moist and never dry out completely.

Description and Notes: Lepanthes barbelifera is a miniature botanical orchid with slender stems, small leathery leaves, and highly detailed flowers. We prefer to grow it mounted with a thin layer of moss or in a very fine, airy substrate. It is particularly well suited to a well-ventilated orchid display case or a similarly equipped terrarium. We use water that is as soft as possible and avoid both dryness and waterlogging.
