Name: Laelia anceps – color form “veitchiana”
Etymology: The genus name Laelia derives from a name from ancient Rome. The Latin specific epithet anceps means “double-edged” or “two-angled” and refers to the flattened shape of the pseudobulbs. The horticultural designation “veitchiana” commemorates the well-known British gardening family, the Veitches.
Origin/Distribution: The species Laelia anceps is native to Mexico and parts of Central America.
Habitat: The species grows predominantly as an epiphyte in bright woodland habitats that are seasonally drier. We recommend very bright, filtered light and good air movement. Temperate conditions of approximately 15–27 °C during the day and 9–18 °C at night are favorable; cooler nights are well tolerated in winter. Water regularly during growth, then keep considerably drier once the growths have matured.
Description and Notes: This color form of Laelia anceps has robust pseudobulbs with leathery leaves and produces long, upright inflorescences. Its elegant flowers display distinctive coloration within this variable species. We grow it in a coarse, very airy orchid mix and water regularly during active growth. Once the pseudobulbs have matured, we reduce water and fertilizer and provide a bright, airy, and slightly cooler location.
