Name: Jumellea arborescens H.Perrier
Etymology: The genus name Jumellea honors the French botanist Henri Lucien Jumelle. The Latin specific epithet arborescens means “becoming tree-like” and refers to its comparatively robust, branching growth habit for an orchid.
Origin/Distribution: Madagascar.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in humid forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air movement. Temperate to warm-temperate conditions of approximately 16–27 °C during the day and 12–19 °C at night are favorable. The roots should receive moisture regularly but be well ventilated between waterings.
Description and Notes: Jumellea arborescens is a monopodially growing African orchid with robust shoots that branch with age and leathery leaves. The characteristic white, star-shaped flowers have a long spur and can be fragrant, especially in the evening. We grow the species in a coarse, airy orchid mix or mounted, with suitably high humidity. We water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and avoid waterlogging.
