Name: Gomesa radicans
Etymology: The genus name Gomesa honors the Portuguese-Brazilian botanist and physician Bernardino António Gomes. The Latin specific epithet radicans means “rooting” and refers to the plant’s ability to form roots along its growth.
Origin/Distribution: Brazil.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in humid subtropical to montane forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, good air circulation, and moderate to high humidity. Temperate conditions of approximately 14–26 °C during the day and 10–18 °C at night are favorable. The roots should be watered regularly and then allowed to dry thoroughly.
Description and Notes: Gomesa radicans produces pseudobulbs with narrow leaves and develops branched or spreading inflorescences with numerous small flowers. We grow this species in a coarse, very airy orchid mix. During active growth, we water and fertilize regularly using water that is as soft as possible; when growth slows, we reduce watering somewhat without allowing the plant to dry out completely for extended periods.
