Name: Epidendrum melanoporphyreum
Etymology: The genus name Epidendrum comes from Greek and essentially means “upon the tree.” The specific epithet melanoporphyreum combines word elements meaning “black” or “dark” and “purple,” referring to the dark purple color of the flowers.
Origin/Distribution: The Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in cool, moist montane to cloud forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool-temperate conditions of approximately 11–22 °C during the day and 7–15 °C at night are favorable. Prolonged heat should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Epidendrum melanoporphyreum produces upright, leafy stems and striking dark purple flowers. We grow this species in a fine- to medium-grade, airy orchid mix that retains a little moisture. We use soft water whenever possible and keep the roots consistently slightly moist, without allowing waterlogging. Good air movement is especially important when humidity is high.
