Description

Epidendrum henschenii

Name: Epidendrum henschenii Barb.Rodr.

Synonyms: Epidendrum brevicolle Kraenzl.

Etymology: The genus name Epidendrum roughly means “upon the tree” and refers to the epiphytic growth habit of many species; henschenii is a species name formed in honor of a person.

First description: In 1882 by João Barbosa Rodrigues.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to Brazil.

Location/Habitat: We grow Epidendrum henschenii in warm to intermediate conditions at around 18–28 °C, with bright filtered light, moderate to high humidity, and good air circulation. During growth, we water regularly and let the airy substrate dry slightly between waterings.

Description and notes: The species produces upright, leafy shoots and inflorescences on mature shoots. Bright conditions encourage vigorous growth and flowering. A pronounced dry rest period is not necessary.
