Name: Epidendrum centropetalum Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Epidendrum comes from Greek and roughly means “on the tree”—a reference to the epiphytic growth habit of many species. The specific epithet centropetalum refers to the characteristic shape or orientation of the flower segments.
Origin/Distribution: Central America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in humid montane forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Temperate conditions of approximately 14–25 °C during the day and 9–18 °C at night are favorable. The plant should receive regular moisture while growing.
Description and Notes: Epidendrum centropetalum is a botanical orchid with a rather compact to slender growth habit, leafy stems, and attractive, delicate flowers. We grow it in a loose, airy orchid mix or mounted, with suitably high humidity. We water regularly with preferably soft water, allow the roots to dry slightly between waterings, and avoid waterlogging.
