Name: Dryadella hirtzii
Etymology: The genus name Dryadella is derived from the dryads, the tree and forest nymphs of Greek mythology, and refers to its epiphytic growth habit. The specific epithet hirtzii is a patronymic.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane Andean forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, diffused light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Temperate conditions of approximately 12–24 °C during the day and 8–17 °C at night are favorable. The fine roots should remain evenly lightly moist and well-aerated.
Description and Notes: Dryadella hirtzii is a small, tufted Pleurothallidinae orchid with narrow leaves and delicate, unusually shaped flowers. We cultivate the species in a fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining orchid substrate or mounted. We use as soft water as possible, avoid prolonged complete drying out, and ensure good air movement, especially at high humidity.
