Description

Dracula xenos

Name: Dracula xenos Luer & R.Escobar

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon.” The Greek epithet xenos means “foreign” or “unusual.”

First described: 1989 by Carlyle A. Luer and Rodrigo Escobar.

Origin/distribution: Colombia.

Location/habitat: Epiphytic on wet, moss-covered trees in the cloud forests of Valle del Cauca, at an elevation of approximately 2,000 m. Recommended conditions are approximately 10–20 °C, high humidity, shade, and constant air movement.

Description and notes: The large, pale-grounded flowers are densely covered with reddish spots and have a yellowish center. They open sequentially on upright flower spikes. Keep the fine, airy substrate slightly moist at all times; avoid heat, stagnant air, and complete drying out.
