Description

Dracula ubangina Juan

Name: Dracula ubangina Luer ‘Juan’

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon” and refers to the unusual, mask-like shape of the flowers. ‘Juan’ designates a selected clone.

First described: 1980 by Carlyle A. Luer.

Origin/distribution: Ecuador.

Location/habitat: Epiphytic on wet, moss-covered trees in moist cloud forests. We recommend cool to temperate conditions of approximately 10–21 °C, high humidity, shaded light, and good air circulation.

Description and notes: The ‘Juan’ clone is distinguished by particularly intensely dark, almost black flowers with a contrasting yellowish lip. The individual flowers appear on long, pendulous stems. An open basket and a fine, airy, permanently slightly moist substrate are ideal.
