Name: Dracula mendozae
Etymology: The genus name Dracula means "little dragon" in Latin and refers to the extraordinary appearance of the flowers. The specific epithet mendozae is a patronymic.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in cool, moist montane cloud forests. We recommend shade to bright, diffused light, high to very high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool conditions of approximately 10–21 °C during the day and 6–14 °C at night are favorable. High temperatures and prolonged drying out should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Dracula mendozae is a pseudobulbless botanical orchid with clumping shoots, elongated leaves, and unusually shaped flowers with elongated sepal tips. We cultivate the species in an airy, moisture-retaining orchid substrate, preferably in a slat basket or hanging pot. We water regularly with as soft water as possible and keep the substrate evenly slightly moist, without allowing waterlogging.
