Name: Dracula marsupialis Luer & R.Escobar
Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon” and refers to the unusual appearance of the flowers. The Latin specific epithet marsupialis means “pouch-shaped” or “belonging to a pouch” and refers to the distinctive shape of a floral feature.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane cloud forests. We recommend shade to partial shade with filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. Cool to cool-temperate conditions of approximately 10–21°C during the day and 6–14°C at night are favorable. The roots should remain evenly moist.
Description and Notes: Dracula marsupialis produces narrow, leathery leaves without pseudobulbs. The flowers have long sepal tails and a striking, complex center. We prefer to grow the species in an open basket so that the inflorescences, which often grow downwards, can develop unhindered. We use a fine, loose, moisture-retaining potting mix. We water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and avoid waterlogging.
