Name: Dracula maduroi Luer
Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon” and refers to the mask-like shape of the flowers. The specific epithet honors the Panamanian orchid expert and plant collector Andrés Maduro.
First described: 2004 by Carlyle A. Luer.
Origin/distribution: Panama.
Location/habitat: Epiphytic in moist lowland rainforests and montane forests in the province of Bocas del Toro, at elevations of approximately 1,000–1,100 m. Suitable conditions include temperatures of approximately 14–23 °C, high humidity, shaded light, and good air circulation.
Description and notes: A compact Dracula with flowers measuring approximately 5 cm. The flower spikes grow laterally to downwards, so an open basket is preferable. We recommend a fine, airy, and moisture-retentive potting medium that remains slightly moist at all times without becoming waterlogged.
