Description

Dracula inaequalis

Name: Dracula inaequalis (Rchb.f.) Luer & R.Escobar

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon”; inaequalis means “unequal”.

Origin/Distribution: Colombia and Ecuador.

Location/Habitat: We cultivate this species in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 10–22°C, with very high humidity, filtered light, and continuous air movement. The fine root system must not dry out completely.

Description and Notes: Dracula inaequalis remains relatively compact and produces pendulous inflorescences with striking flowers distinguished by their sepals. A fine, highly porous substrate that retains some moisture is ideal. Strong air movement is particularly important at higher temperatures.
