Description

Dracula hirsuta 'Yellow'

Name: Dracula hirsuta Luer & Andreetta ‘Yellow’

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon.” The Latin specific epithet hirsuta means “shaggy” or “very hairy”; ‘Yellow’ refers to the yellowish color form.

First described: 1980 by Carlyle A. Luer and P. Andreetta.

Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.

Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in moist montane forests at approximately 1,600 m. The species prefers cool to temperate temperatures of approximately 11–21 °C, high humidity, shaded conditions, and good air circulation.

Description and Notes: This selection has yellowish, densely hairy flowers with long sepals. Several flowers may appear successively on a pendulous shoot. An open basket and a fine, airy, consistently slightly moist substrate are ideal.
