Name: Dracula hawleyi Luer

Etymology: Dracula means “little dragon” and refers to the unusual flower shape. The specific epithet honors orchid expert Ron Hawley.

First description: 1978 by Carlyle A. Luer.

Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.

Location/Habitat: Epiphytic on wet, moss-covered trees in high-altitude cloud forests, at about 2,500–2,800 m. It should be grown in cool conditions at approximately 8–18 °C, in the shade, with very high humidity and good air circulation.

Description and notes: This medium-sized species produces striking flowers with long sepal tails. The hanging flower spikes can produce several flowers in succession. We recommend an open basket and a fine, airy medium that stays evenly moist; avoid heat and stagnant air.
