Name: Dracula gorgona
Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon” in Latin and refers to the unusual appearance of the flowers. The specific epithet gorgona refers to the Gorgons of Greek mythology and alludes to the striking, almost fantastical shape of the flowers.
Origin/Distribution: Northern Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in cool, very moist montane cloud forests. We recommend shade to bright, diffused light, very high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool conditions of approximately 10–20°C during the day and 6–14°C at night are ideal. High temperatures and prolonged drying out should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Dracula gorgona is a pseudobulbless orchid with clumping shoots and elongated leaves. The unusual flowers have elongated sepal tips and the characteristic, complex shape of the genus. We cultivate the species in a very airy, moisture-retaining substrate, preferably in a slat basket or hanging pot. We use water that is as soft as possible and keep the substrate evenly slightly moist without allowing water to accumulate.
