Name: Dracula gigas (Luer) Luer ‘Xanthina Gigi’
Synonyms: Masdevallia gigas Luer
Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon.” The Latin gigas means “giant” and refers to the large flowers.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia and Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic on moss-covered trees in very moist cloud forests, at elevations of approximately 1,700 to 2,600 m. It requires cool temperatures of around 10–21°C, shade, very high humidity, and constant gentle air movement.
Description and Notes: This yellowish selection of Dracula gigas produces large flowers on horizontal to downward-pointing inflorescences. An open basket allows the inflorescences to grow through freely. We keep the fine, airy potting medium consistently slightly moist, use low-calcium water, and consistently protect the plant from heat.
