Description

Dracula gigas f. black

Name: Dracula gigas (Luer) Luer ‘Black’

Synonyms: Masdevallia gigas Luer

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon”. The Latin gigas means “giant” and refers to the large flowers.

Origin/Distribution: Colombia and Ecuador.

Habitat: Epiphytic in very humid cloud forests, at approximately 1,700 to 2,600 m. Suitable conditions include cool temperatures of about 10–21 °C, shade, high humidity, and constant gentle air movement.

Description and Notes: The dark-colored selection ‘Black’ produces large flowers on horizontal to downward-growing inflorescences. We use an open basket so that the inflorescences can develop unhindered. The fine, airy substrate should remain permanently slightly moist; low-calcium water and protection from higher temperatures are important.
