Description

Dracula fuligifera

Name: Dracula fuligifera Luer

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon.” The specific epithet fuligifera means “soot-bearing” and refers to the dark flower markings.

First described: 1991 by Carlyle A. Luer.

Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.

Habitat: Epiphytic on wet, mossy trees in humid cloud forests, at an altitude of approximately 1,800–2,000 m. Recommended conditions are approximately 10–20 °C, high humidity, shaded light, and constant air movement.

Description and notes: The medium-sized, darkly marked flowers appear singly on pendulous stems; the contrasting lip enhances the mask-like appearance. An open basket with fine, airy, and consistently slightly moist substrate is ideal. Avoid heat and stagnant air.
