Description

Dracula felix

Name: Dracula felix (Luer) Luer

Synonyms: Masdevallia felix Luer

Etymology: The genus name Dracula means "little dragon"; felix means "happy" or "fertile."

Origin/Distribution: Colombia and Ecuador.

Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in very humid mountain and cloud forests. We cultivate it cool to intermediate at about 10–22 °C, with high humidity, filtered light, and continuous air movement. We keep the roots consistently slightly moist.

Description and Notes: The inflorescences grow predominantly pendulous and bear striking flowers with the characteristic long sepal tips. The contrasting, hairy inner flower parts are particularly appealing. A fine, airy, and moisture-retaining substrate as well as soft water are beneficial.
