Name: Dracula antonii Luer
Etymology: The genus name Dracula means “little dragon” and refers to the unusual, often animal-faced appearance of the flowers. The specific epithet antonii is a patronymic.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane cloud forests. We recommend shade to partial shade with filtered light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool to moderate conditions of approximately 11–22°C during the day and 7–15°C at night are favorable. Prolonged heat should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Dracula antonii does not form pseudobulbs, but rather narrow, leathery leaves on short stems. The flowers possess the long sepals with tails characteristic of the genus and a striking, detailed pattern. We prefer to cultivate the species in an open basket with a fine, loose, and moisture-retaining substrate. We water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and keep the roots consistently moist. We always combine high humidity with good air movement.
