Description

Dracula anthracina

Name: Dracula anthracina Luer & R.Escobar

Etymology: Dracula means “little dragon.” The specific epithet anthracina means “coal-black” and refers to the very dark flower color.

First description: In 1982 by Carlyle A. Luer and Rodrigo Escobar.

Origin/Distribution: Colombia.

Location/Habitat: Epiphytic on wet, moss-covered trees in cloud forests in the Department of Boyacá, at about 1,800–2,500 m elevation. Suitable conditions are approximately 9–19 °C, very high humidity, shaded light, and good air circulation.

Description and Notes: The large, deeply dark-colored and densely hairy flowers grow on lateral to slightly pendent shoots. We recommend an open basket with a fine, airy, moisture-retentive medium. Never allow the roots to dry out completely, but avoid waterlogging.
