Name: Dichaea ecuadorensis
Etymology: The genus name Dichaea is derived from Greek word elements and refers to characteristics of the floral structure. The specific epithet ecuadorensis means “from Ecuador” and refers to the geographical origin of the species.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Temperate to warm-temperate conditions of approximately 14–26 °C during the day and 10–19 °C at night are favorable. The roots should be kept moist regularly without remaining constantly wet.
Description and Notes: Dichaea ecuadorensis produces slender, often pendulous shoots with distichously arranged leaves. The flowers emerge singly along the shoots and exhibit the characteristic structure of the genus. We prefer to cultivate the species mounted or in a very airy, slightly moisture-retaining orchid substrate. We use as soft water as possible and avoid allowing it to dry out completely for extended periods.
