Description

Dendrobium thyrsiflorum

Name: Dendrobium thyrsiflorum B.S.Williams

Etymology: The genus name Dendrobium is derived from Greek and literally means "living on trees." The specific epithet thyrsiflorum means "with thyrse-like inflorescences" and refers to the dense, pendent clusters of flowers.

Origin/Distribution: Northeast India, the Himalayan region, Southern China, and parts of Southeast Asia.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in seasonal montane forests. We recommend very bright but filtered light and good air movement. During the growing period, temperate conditions of approximately 16–27 °C during the day and 11–19 °C at night are favorable. In winter, cooler nights and a significantly drier cultivation promote flower formation.

Description and Notes: Dendrobium thyrsiflorum produces upright to slightly arching, leafy stems. Mature stems can produce impressive, pendent racemes with numerous white flowers and a deep yellow to orange-yellow lip. During active growth, we water and fertilize generously. After the stems have matured, we significantly reduce water and fertilizer and cultivate in brighter and cooler conditions until new activity or flower buds appear.
