Description

Dendrobium sulcatum (10 cm hanging pot)

Name: Dendrobium sulcatum Lindl.

Etymology: The genus name Dendrobium is derived from the Greek words for "tree" and "life," describing the epiphytic growth habit of many species. The Latin specific epithet sulcatum means "furrowed" and refers to the distinctly furrowed or angular stems.

Origin/Distribution: Himalayan region, Northeast India, and parts of Southeast Asia.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in seasonally moist montane forests. We recommend bright, filtered light and good air circulation. During the growing season, temperate to warm-temperate conditions of approximately 16–28 °C during the day and 11–19 °C at night are favorable. In winter, the species tolerates cooler nights and should be kept significantly drier.

Description and Notes: Dendrobium sulcatum develops characteristically flattened to furrowed stems and bears several leaves in the upper section. The attractive yellow flowers usually appear on mature, older stems. We water and fertilize regularly during active growth. As soon as the new stems have matured, we reduce water and fertilizer significantly and provide a brighter, cooler dormant period; the pseudobulbs should not shrink excessively during this time.
