Name: Dendrobium loddigesii Rolfe
Etymology: The genus name Dendrobium means “living on trees”; loddigesii honors the English horticultural family Loddiges.
First described: 1887 by Robert Allen Rolfe.
Origin/distribution: The species is found in China and parts of southeastern mainland Asia.
Location/habitat: We grow Dendrobium loddigesii in intermediate to warm conditions during the growing season, at approximately 16–27°C, in very bright conditions with good air circulation. In spring and summer, we water and fertilize regularly.
Description and notes: The slender, creeping to pendulous shoots bear striking pink to purple individual flowers with a large, fringed lip and an orange-yellow center. In winter, we provide the plant with a distinctly cooler and drier dormant period, but do not allow the shoots to dry out completely for extended periods. Bright light and cooler nights promote flowering.
