Name: Dendrobium hellwigianum Kraenzl. ex Warb.

Etymology: The genus name Dendrobium means "living on trees." The epithet hellwigianum honors the physician and botanist Franz Carl Hellwig.

Origin/Distribution: New Guinea.

Habitat/Growing Conditions: Epiphytic in humid cloud forests at high altitudes, roughly between 1,400 and 2,700 m. This miniature requires cool conditions of approximately 8–20 °C, high humidity, shaded to filtered light, and constant air movement.

Description and Notes: Dendrobium hellwigianum forms short, densely clustered shoots and comparatively large flowers, whose color can vary from pink and dark red to bluish-violet. The offered material comes from an intraspecific cross with the intensely colored selection ‘Warren’. We keep the fine roots slightly moist year-round, but avoid standing water and particularly warm summer conditions.
