Name: Dendrobium farmeri
Description & Notes: An attractive Asian Dendrobium species with robust, club-shaped shoots and impressive, pendulous flower spikes. The plant has a distinct seasonal growth cycle. During the development of new shoots, it requires plenty of water and nutrients; after the shoots have matured, cooler and drier conditions promote flowering.
Light: Bright to very bright with plenty of filtered light. Mild morning or evening sun is beneficial; avoid intense midday sun.
Temperature: During growth, temperatures should be mild to warm, ideally around 18–27 °C during the day and 14–19 °C at night. In winter, cooler nights of around 10–15 °C are beneficial.
Water & Humidity: Water regularly and thoroughly during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings. After the shoots have matured in autumn, reduce watering significantly. During the cooler dormant period, water only enough to prevent the shoots from shrinking excessively. Water more frequently again at the start of new growth. A humidity level of around 55–75% with good air circulation is beneficial.
Substrate: Coarse, highly airy bark-based orchid substrate with excellent drainage. A hanging basket is particularly well suited due to the pendulous flower spikes.
