Description

Dendrobium chrysotoxum (16 cm hanging pot)

Name: Dendrobium chrysotoxum Lindl.
Synonyms: Callista chrysotoxa (Lindl.) Kuntze; Dendrobium suavissimum Rchb.f.; Dendrobium chrysotoxum var. delacourii Rolfe.
Etymology: chrysotoxum = golden bow — derived from the Greek chrysos (gold) and toxon (bow), referring to the arching, golden-yellow inflorescences.

First described: Described by John Lindley in 1847.
Origin / Distribution: Southeast Asia (India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Southern China/Yunnan).
Location / Habitat: Epiphytic in open deciduous forests or evergreen mountain forests at altitudes of 400 to 1,600 m. It prefers bright, often sun-exposed locations with distinct seasonal variations between wet and dry seasons.
Description & Notes: This impressive species forms club-shaped, ribbed pseudobulbs that bear several leathery, deep green leaves at the tip. The inflorescences are densely packed with up to 20 golden-yellow, waxy flowers that emit an intense, honey-like fragrance. The lip is often covered with darker orange-yellow hairs and forms a beautiful contrast to the lighter petals.

In cultivation, Dendrobium chrysotoxum requires plenty of light (bright to very bright) and ample water and fertilizer during the growing season. Important for successful flowering: In winter, a strict rest period with significantly cooler temperatures and almost complete dryness (only occasional misting to prevent excessive shriveling) is necessary. Without this cool, dry rest, flowering in spring usually does not occur.
