Name: Cycnoches herrenhusanum Jenny & G.A.Romero
Etymology: The genus name Cycnoches is derived from the Greek words for “swan” and “neck,” referring to the shape of the male column. The specific epithet refers to Herrenhausen in Hanover, where the species first flowered in cultivation.
First description: 1991 by Rudolf Jenny and Gustavo A. Romero.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia and Ecuador.
Habitat: Epiphytic in warm, very humid lowland forests of the Pacific region, at an elevation of approximately 200 m. During growth, the species prefers about 20–30 °C, high humidity, bright filtered light, and strong air movement.
Description and notes: The plant forms robust, deciduous pseudobulbs and unisexual flowers. Water and fertilize abundantly during active growth. As soon as the leaves die back after flowering, significantly reduce watering. Do not resume regular watering until a new shoot and actively growing roots are visible.
