Name: Comparettia macroplectron Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Comparettia honors the Italian naturalist Andrea Comparetti; macroplectron means “large spur” and refers to the conspicuously long flower spur.
First description: 1878 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia.
Location/Habitat: We grow this epiphytic species in cool to intermediate conditions at about 12–23 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and continuous air movement. The fine roots must not be allowed to dry out completely.
Description and Notes: This small-growing orchid produces small, flattened pseudobulbs, narrow leaves, and delicate flower spikes. Its characteristic flowers range from pink to pale in color and have a large lip and long spur. Mounting it on cork or bark is particularly suitable when humidity is sufficiently high.
