Name: Coelogyne asperata Lindl.
Synonyms: Coelogyne lowii Paxton; Coelogyne macrophylla Teijsm. & Binn.; Pleione asperata (Lindl.) Kuntze
Etymology: The specific epithet asperata means "rough" or "uneven" and refers to the textured lip.
First description: 1849 by John Lindley.
Origin/Distribution: Borneo and other parts of the Malay Archipelago.
Habitat: Epiphytic in humid lowland and mountain rainforests. Suitable conditions are warm temperatures of about 18–29 °C, high humidity, bright indirect light, and good air circulation.
Description and notes: This robust species forms large, ribbed pseudobulbs, each with two lanceolate leaves. Long, pendulous inflorescences bear numerous creamy white flowers with a yellow to brownish marked, roughly textured lip; the flowers can be slightly fragrant. Due to its sprawling growth habit, we recommend a large basket or hanging pot with coarse bark. Water generously during the growth phase; after the pseudobulbs have matured, water more sparingly, but do not allow a strict dry rest period.
