Name: Bulbophyllum ornatissimum (Rchb.f.) J.J.Sm.
Synonyms: Cirrhopetalum ornatissimum Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Bulbophyllum refers to the leaf that is attached to each pseudobulb; ornatissimum means figuratively "very richly decorated".
Origin/Distribution: The species is native to the eastern Himalayas.
Location/Cultivation conditions: We cultivate the plant intermediately at around 16–25 °C, in bright to partial shade, with high humidity and very good air movement. We keep the airy, slightly moisture-retaining substrate evenly slightly moist during growth.
Description and notes: Bulbophyllum ornatissimum has the striking flowers with elongated segments characteristic of its relatives. The species was historically confused with similar taxa; for cultivation, high humidity, good ventilation, and an airy root zone are particularly important.
