Name: Cattleya Valda × Laelia briegeri
Etymology: Cattleya (named in honor of British orchid collector William Cattley);
Valda (the registered name of the hybrid
Cattleya cross);
Laelia (named after the Roman Vestal Virgin Laelia);
briegeri (named in honor of German-Brazilian botanist and geneticist Friedrich Gustav Brieger).
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar. The parent species and ancestors involved originate primarily from the Neotropical regions of South America (particularly the mountainous rocky and forested regions of Brazil).
Location / Habitat: Epiphytic to lithophytic. After deflasking, requires temperate to warm conditions, a very bright location with plenty of indirect light (protect from strong midday sun), humidity of around 60–80%, and continuous, good air circulation.
Description & Notes: This attractive cross combines the large-flowered elegance and substance of the classic hybrid
Cattleya Valda with the excellent qualities of the Brazilian rupicolous (rock-dwelling) species
Laelia briegeri (syn.
Cattleya briegeri).
Laelia briegeri passes on its compact, sturdy growth habit, bright yellow flower colors, and remarkably firm floral tissues.
Cattleya Valda, in turn, contributes fullness, more voluminous flower forms, and a broad color range. The seedlings promise compact to medium-sized plants, expected to produce floriferous inflorescences with long-lasting, waxy, firm flowers in warm yellow, orange, or pastel shades. After deflasking, they are ideally suited to growing in small pots with very airy, fast-drying bark substrate.
