Description

Cattleya skinneri

Name: Cattleya skinneri Bateman

Etymology: The genus name Cattleya honors William Cattley; skinneri commemorates the British plant collector George Ure Skinner.

Origin/Distribution: Central America.

Location/Habitat: An epiphytic or lithophytic orchid found in bright, seasonally moist habitats. Grow in very bright, airy conditions. Water generously and fertilize lightly during growth; keep somewhat drier once the growths have matured. A temperature of about 17–29 °C is suitable.

Description and Notes: Cattleya skinneri produces vigorous, two-leaved pseudobulbs and often bears abundant flower spikes in spring. The flowers are usually pink to purple with a darker lip; white forms also occur. Plenty of light is important for compact growths and prolific flowering.
