Name: Cattleya maxima Lindl.
Origin/Distribution: Western South America, primarily Ecuador and Peru.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic orchid from seasonally varying moist forests. It prefers bright light, good air circulation, and a root zone that dries out quickly. For cultivation, temperatures of approximately 18–29 °C with a slight night-time drop are suitable.
Description and Notes: Cattleya maxima forms elongated pseudobulbs each with a single leathery leaf and bears several large, elegant flowers on mature shoots. Typical are lavender-pink to purple-colored flowers with a striking, patterned lip. Water thoroughly and fertilize lightly during growth; keep somewhat drier after the shoots have matured, without allowing the plant to dry out completely for long periods.
