Description

Cattleya loddigesii

Name: Cattleya loddigesii Lindl.

Etymology: The genus name Cattleya honors William Cattley; loddigesii commemorates the London gardener and plant dealer Joachim Conrad Loddiges.

Origin/Distribution: Southeastern Brazil to Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.

Epiphytic orchid of bright, seasonally moist forests. Grow in very bright and airy conditions in coarse bark. Water regularly during the growing season; keep slightly drier and cooler in winter. Temperatures around 15–28 °C are suitable.

Description and Notes: Cattleya loddigesii produces two-leaved pseudobulbs and several pink to lavender, often fragrant flowers per shoot. The lip is usually more strongly marked with purple. Allowing it to dry out clearly between waterings protects the vigorous roots.
