Name: Cattleya dowiana Bateman & Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Cattleya honors William Cattley; dowiana was chosen in honor of Captain J. M. Dow.
Origin/Distribution: Costa Rica and western Panama.
Location/Habitat: An epiphytic orchid of warm, seasonally dry forests. Grow in very bright, warm, airy conditions. Coarse bark and rapid drainage are essential. Water regularly while new growth is developing; once it has matured, provide a distinctly drier period. Temperatures of about 20–30 °C are suitable.
Description and Notes: Cattleya dowiana is known for its large golden-yellow flowers with a velvety, deep red-purple lip marked with fine patterns. The species is sensitive to persistently wet roots, especially during its dormant period. Plenty of light and warmth encourage the pseudobulbs to mature and promote flowering.
