Description

Bulbophyllum vaginatum

Name: Bulbophyllum vaginatum (Lindl.) Rchb.f.
Synonyms: Cirrhopetalum vaginatum Lindl.; Phyllorkis vaginata (Lindl.) Kuntze.
Etymology: vaginatum is derived from the Latin vagina (sheath or covering) and refers to the large, sheath-like bracts at the base of the inflorescence.

First description: Described in 1830 by John Lindley as Cirrhopetalum vaginatum; transferred to the genus Bulbophyllum in 1864 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.
Origin / Distribution:
Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Philippines).
Location / Habitat:
Grows epiphytically in lowland rainforests and mangroves at elevations from sea level to approximately 600 m. The species prefers warm conditions and is often found in more exposed locations with good air movement.
Description & Notes:
This species belongs to section Cirrhopetalum and is known for its spectacular, fan-shaped inflorescences. The yellow to cream-colored flowers have extremely elongated lateral sepals that hang down like fine threads, giving the inflorescence a “hairy” or delicate appearance. The pseudobulbs are ovoid and grow at regular intervals along a stout rhizome.

In cultivation, Bulbophyllum vaginatum requires warm temperatures and high humidity. Due to its creeping growth habit and drooping inflorescences, mounting it on cork or growing it in shallow hanging baskets is ideal. The substrate should be kept moist during the growth phase, while good drainage and air circulation are essential to keep the delicate roots healthy.
