Description

Bulbophyllum speciosum

Name: Bulbophyllum speciosum Schltr.
Synonyms:
Etymology:
speciosum = splendid / handsome — refers to the striking and attractive appearance of the flower.
First described: 1912 by Rudolf Schlechter in “Die Orchidaceen von Deutsch-Neu-Guinea.”
Origin / Distribution:
New Guinea.
Location / Habitat:
Growing epiphytically in mountain forests at elevations of approx. 1,200 to 2,300 m. The species prefers cool to intermediate conditions and locations with high humidity and moderate shade.
Description & Notes:
Bulbophyllum speciosum belongs to the section Hyalosema. The plant produces robust, egg-shaped pseudobulbs on a creeping rhizome, each bearing a single leathery leaf. The flower is relatively large and spectacularly shaped for the genus: the upper sepal is often upright and elongated, while the lateral sepals hang downward. The coloring is usually yellowish to greenish, with intense purplish-brown stripes or spots.

In cultivation, the species requires consistently high humidity and good air circulation. Since it comes from higher elevations, cool nights benefit the plant’s well-being. It should preferably be grown mounted on cork or tree fern to accommodate its creeping growth habit. The substrate should be kept moist but not waterlogged, as the roots are sensitive to oxygen deficiency.
