Description

Bulbophyllum odontopetalum

Name: Bulbophyllum odontopetalum Schltr.
Synonyms:
Etymology:
odontopetalum is derived from the Greek words odous (tooth) and petalon (petal); this refers to the toothed or serrated edges of the petals.
First description: 1913 by Rudolf Schlechter in “Die Orchidaceen von Deutsch-Neu-Guinea.”
Origin / Distribution:
New Guinea (Bismarck Archipelago) and the Solomon Islands.
Location / Habitat:
Growing epiphytically in primary rainforests at elevations of approx. 200 to 1,000 m. It prefers warm to intermediate conditions in shady, consistently moist areas.
Description & Notes:
Bulbophyllum odontopetalum is a small to medium-sized species with a creeping rhizome and ovate pseudobulbs that grow at intervals. The inflorescences are usually short and bear small, often yellowish to pale green flowers, notable for the fine, distinctive structure of their petals reflected in the species’ name. The lip is usually darker in color and movable.

In cultivation, the plant requires high humidity and must never be allowed to dry out completely due to its origin in tropical rainforest. It grows best mounted on cork or in shallow baskets with an airy medium of fine bark and sphagnum moss. A partially shaded location without direct sunlight, along with good air circulation, is essential for healthy growth.
