Name: Bulbophyllum longiflorum Thouars
Etymology: The genus name Bulbophyllum literally means "bulb-leaf" and refers to the pseudobulbs with their leaves; longiflorum means "long-flowered."
Origin/Distribution: The species has an exceptionally wide range from Africa and Madagascar across tropical Asia to the western Pacific.
Location/Habitat: We cultivate this epiphytic species in warm to intermediate conditions at approximately 17–28 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation. We keep the airy substrate consistently slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
Description and Notes: This creeping plant forms distinct pseudobulbs, each with a single leathery leaf. The umbellate inflorescences, whose elongated flowers are arranged in a radial pattern, are particularly striking. Shallow pot culture or mounted culture works well. We avoid prolonged periods of complete dryness.
