Name: Bulbophyllum graveolens, J.J. Sm. 1912
Synonyms: Bulbophyllum pachybulbum (Schltr.) Seidenf. 1973 publ. 1974
Cirrhopetalum graveolens F.M. Bailey 1896
Cirrhopetalum pachybulbum Schltr. 1913
Cirrhopetalum robustum Rolfe 1893
Etymology: graveolens = strongly scented
Origin: Papua New Guinea
Habitat: Epiphyte, growing on tree trunks in rainforests at elevations of 100 to 600 meters
Notes: After the flowers open, the scent is very intense; after 2–3 days it becomes sweet and pleasant. Mature plants can develop leaves up to 50 cm long and bloom up to four times per pseudobulb.
In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be removed from the flask. After opening, carefully remove all the nutrient medium from the roots with lukewarm water and pot the young plants in a fine, very airy substrate that retains a little moisture. During the first few weeks, we recommend high humidity, warm conditions, and bright, sheltered light; thereafter, gradually acclimate the plants to greater air movement and normal Bulbophyllum culture.
