Sarcopodium grandiflorum (Bl) Lindl. 1853
Etymology: grandiflorus = large-flowered
Origin: Indonesia (Sumatra, Sulawesi, Moluccas), Papua New Guinea
Habitat: epiphytic at altitudes of 100 to 800 meters in primary rainforests on the lower trunks of large trees
Notes: large flowers, the pale patches on the uppermost petal (dorsal sepal) are particularly interesting. These pale patches trick insects that have wandered into the flower into thinking there is a way out, thus allowing the flower to be pollinated in nature.
