Name: Brassocattleya Ivan Portilla ‘Camila’
Parents: Cattleya purpurata × Brassavola cucullata
Registration: Brassocattleya Ivan Portilla was registered by Ecuagenera in the RHS International Orchid Register in 2023.
Etymology: The genus name Brassocattleya denotes a hybrid of Brassavola and Cattleya. The grex name honors Ivan Portilla; ‘Camila’ identifies the selected cultivar.
Location/Growing conditions: We recommend a very bright location with filtered light and some gentle morning or evening sun. The hybrid grows under intermediate to warm conditions at about 16–28 °C and benefits from a slight drop in temperature at night. A coarse, fast-drying bark mix, strong air movement, and around 55–75% humidity are beneficial. Water thoroughly during growth, then allow the medium to dry slightly; in winter, adjust watering to the slower growth without letting the pseudobulbs shrivel significantly.
Description and notes: ‘Camila’ combines the vigorous, upright habit and large, fragrant flowers of Cattleya purpurata with the narrow, elegantly tapering flower segments of Brassavola cucullata. The flowers display a star-shaped silhouette and a striking lip. Very bright light, good air circulation, and free drainage promote strong new growths and reliable flowering.
