Description

Rhyncholaelia digbyana

Name: Rhyncholaelia digbyana (Lindl.) Schltr.

Synonyms: Brassavola digbyana Lindl.

Etymology: The genus name Rhyncholaelia refers to the beak-like column and its historical affinity to Laelia; digbyana honors Edward St. Vincent Digby.

Origin/Distribution: Mexico and northern Central America.

Location/Habitat: Epiphytic orchid of bright, seasonally dry forests. Cultivate in a very bright, warm, and airy environment. Coarse bark or mounted culture are well-suited. Water regularly during growth; allow to dry out significantly afterwards. Approximately 19–30 °C is appropriate.

Description and notes: Rhyncholaelia digbyana bears large, greenish-white flowers that are strongly fragrant at night. The deeply fringed, broad lip is particularly striking. The species is an important parent of numerous Cattleya alliance hybrids. Plenty of light is crucial for compact growth and flower initiation.
