Description

Bifrenaria tyrianthina

Name: Bifrenaria tyrianthina (Lodd. ex Loudon) Rchb.f.

Etymology: The genus name Bifrenaria refers to two bridle-like structures in the flower; tyrianthina refers to the strong purple effect of the blossoms.

Origin/Distribution: The species originates from Brazil.

Location/Habitat: We cultivate Bifrenaria tyrianthina under intermediate conditions at approximately 14–25 °C, with bright, filtered light, medium to high humidity, and good air circulation. During active growth, we water regularly.

Description and Notes: This robust Bifrenaria develops pseudobulbs and striking, waxy pink to purple flowers. After new pseudobulbs have matured, we reduce watering somewhat, but do not allow the plant to dry out completely for extended periods.
