Name: Barbosella cucullata
Etymology: The genus name Barbosella honors the Brazilian botanist João Barbosa Rodrigues. The Latin specific epithet cucullata means “hood-shaped” and refers to a correspondingly shaped feature of the flower.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically and forms small, creeping colonies in moist forests. We recommend shaded to semi-shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Cool-temperate to temperate conditions of approximately 12–24 °C during the day and 8–17 °C at night are favorable. The fine roots should receive regular moisture, but should not stand in stagnant water.
Description and Notes: Barbosella cucullata is a miniature orchid with a creeping rhizome, small leaves, and flowers that are striking and detailed in proportion to the plant. We particularly like to cultivate it mounted on cork or in a very small pot with fine, airy substrate. For mounted cultivation, we water or mist regularly, using the softest water possible. High humidity and continuous air circulation promote compact, healthy growth.
