Name: Andinia lappacea
Etymology: The genus name Andinia refers to the Andes, where many species of this Pleurothallidinae group occur. The Latin specific epithet lappacea means “burr-like” in a figurative sense and refers to a characteristic feature of the flowers or their surface.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, diffused light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Temperate to warm-temperate conditions of approximately 14–25°C during the day and 10–18°C at night are favorable. The fine roots should be kept moist regularly and not allowed to dry out completely for extended periods.
Description and Notes: Andinia lappacea is a small botanical orchid with a compact growth habit and unusual, finely textured flowers. We prefer to cultivate the species mounted at high humidity or in a very fine, loose, and slightly moisture-retaining orchid substrate. We water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and ensure that good air movement is maintained at all times despite the high humidity.
